Warsaw University of Technology (WUT), established in 1826, is the Polish oldest and greatest technical academic school, having now about 30000 students and 2 500 academic staff. Re-established after the World War 2. in 1945 since the very beginning it has had ambition of maintaining and developing international co-operation and to be internationally recognised. It is evident that till 1989 and, in particular in the period 1945-1956, the balanced and concerted international relations were not easy. The preferences were given to contacts with so-called 'socialistic countries', being all forced to follow the same political doctrine. Nevertheless Poland, and Warsaw University of Technology in particular, succeeded to overpass these barriers and to keep quite efficient contacts with the Western countries. Agreements and visits concerning research co-operation, participation in international conferences and symposia with accepted papers, and finally contracts as visiting professors were quite frequent and allowed to keep the level of our research and education following the world trends. Poland's re-entering to the free world in 1989 opened new perspectives in developing international relations and Warsaw University of Technology joined this opportunity. Market economy and internal exchangeability of Polish currency made foreign visits of academic staff affordable and the co-operation could be much broader. The European Union educational and research assistance programmes such as TEMPUS and COST, later COPERNICUS SOCRATES, LEONARDO, FP4 and lastly FP5 played a crucial role. Their impact on the internationalisation of all University's activities was enormous. Mutual visits, purchase of equipment, joined projects, etc. approached Warsaw University of Technology to their Western partners. Last but not least was the possibility to become member of international associations. Very soon became WUT a member of SEFI, IACEE, CRE, EAIE and ELLI. Warsaw University of Technology has broad activity in education and research. It participates in numerous research and scientific programmes and grants, both international and national. In particular each year WUT is a co-ordinator of about 150 grants awarded by the National Committee for Scientific Research and participated actively in ESPRIT, ACTS and TELEMATICS programmes. There are 19 Faculties and Colleges:
In this proposal three faculties: Electronics and Information Technology, Chemistry and Environmental Engineering take part. They have broad national and international experience in the area of science and technology covered by this proposal. In particular in the Electronics and Information Technology Faculty 2 Institutes will participate: Institute of Electronic Systems (IES) and Institute of Micro- and Opto-electronics.
